Hello friends.
This week we have been properly introduced to February in Iowa. Let me put this in perspective by saying that on Tuesday (yes, 3 days ago on the 14th) it was sunny with a high temperature of 63 degrees. All the kids in the neighborhood were outside playing. They were running around in t-shirts and asking about shorts (some were already in shorts).
After a few months of wind and snow and sub-40 degree temps, it looked like spring was approaching. On Tuesday, when it was so nice, someone at work treated the warm weather like it was bad news saying, "well, it only means we're really gonna get hammered this year. We always get nailed the last 2 weeks of February." I thought that he was crazy because spring was fast approaching.
I was wrong. He was right.
On Wednesday the high temperature was in the low 30's with warnings of a coming storm. Yesterday, on Thursday, the high was 23 and we got 4-6 inches of blowing snow. This morning I went out to re-clear the driveway and the sidewalk and it was -4 degrees (yes, Fahrenheit). However, with wind chill it felt like -27. That's pretty cold.
The best part of this is the wind. It's currently blowing about 20-25 mph and swirling around our house. The good news is that the snowblower REALLY threw the snow - IF the wind was blowing the same way the chute was pointed. If not, then I had snow in my face and it was like standing in a white-out blizzard. A lot of the time the wind was just swirling around and I could never get the chute pointed the right way. Needless to say, it took me longer than I wished it did, and when I was done I was frozen like a hairy popsicle. That's me in the picture - frozen. The hat I am wearing is BLACK, but it's lightly dusted with snow and frost. My face is just plain frozen (yes, that's ice clinging to my face). I am currently on hiatus from shaving and you can see where the ice formed in my non-beard facial hair (again, I am not growing a beard, but I am currently on hiatus from shaving) and my eyebrows/lashes.
And, guess what, it's going to get colder before we're done - I'll bet you guessed that though. Tonight it's going to
be "Bitterly cold" according to the weather service. We should see temperatures as low as -18 degrees Fahrenheit (for those of you partial to the metric system, it sounds even colder to say -27 Celsius). With wind chill, that will feel like -35 Fahrenheit.
Well, that's our news. We hope all of you are warm and happy and had a wonderful Valentine's day with your significant others. For those of you without significant others this year, please bathe and better luck next year.
Have a wonderful day,
Marvin
p.s. That's not gray in my non-beard facial hair. It's ice.
