Yes, we know. We're bad bloggers.

Greetings from Iowa!

We are snowed in (apparently). It started snowing last night about 10pm and didn't stop until about noon today. We got 6-8 inches of snow on top of the 6 inches we got last week that hasn't melted at all yet. Don't fear, the MANTRUK loves it. For those of you who don't know, I bought a 'retired' military suburban from my bro-in-law that is a 1993 4x4, 3/4 ton, with no options -no A/C, no electric windows, no electric door locks, etc... and its license plate says MANTRUK. It loves the snow.

I got up this morning, showered, got dressed, ready to walk out the door at 7:10am for Priesthood Executive Committee (PEC) Meeting at church and the phone rang; they cancelled PEC because of the snow and the plows weren't out on the roads yet. I was truly disappointed. The MANTRUK wanted to go for a drive in the snow. It's like a dog getting all worked up for a walk and then you put the leash away. Here's what it was like this morning looking out my front door and across the road.

Anyway, at about 7:45am, we got another call to let us know church was cancelled, but the bishop gave us the OK to have Sacrament in our homes. I think I actually heard our pioneer forefathers turning in their graves. However, we had a little Sacrament meeting at home and I blessed and passed the Sacrament. It was very nice.

Last Saturday (13th of January) Gavin was the most eager for the snow. It was starting to snow and he kept getting dressed, going outside, then coming in and reporting on the progress. It was the definition of anticipation.

We got a good little snow Saturday night and most of the day on Sunday. Monday morning I got up and had to shovel/blow about 6 inches of snow. It was very cold outside and my "winter beard" was finally paying off. Even though it was around 0 degrees outside and there was ice in my beard, my face wasn't frozen. This may sound like I'm trying to justify my beard, and if that's what you think then you're right. However, it will come off when I have to start mowing my yard again. That's my rule. Stop shaving when I stop mowing and start shaving when I start mowing. It works for me, but not so much for Deborah.

This last week it's been quite chilly in the morning when the kids go out to get on the bus for school. On the Tuesday after it snowed it was well below 0 degrees when they went out for the bus. I think this was the first time that they were a little hesitant to go out early. I say a little, because they only went out about 5 minutes early that day. Usually, they're out at least 10 minutes before the bus comes. That is only about 9 minutes and 40 seconds sooner than the other kids in the neighborhood. Here's a shot of the weather forecast for about 30 minutes before the kids headed out.

Well, I make no promises, but I hope we will be a little more regular in updating our blog than 2 or 3 times per year.

We hope you're all doing well and are happy,

Marvin and the rest of the Smith family.
